What Should You Confirm Before Ordering a Lockin Smart Lock for a Condo?

Confirm condo approval, exact door fit, camera and solar rules, building access, and backup entry before ordering a Lockin smart lock.

Before ordering a Lockin smart lock for a condo, confirm four things in writing: your building allows the hardware change, the exact model fits the unit’s door preparation, the building’s access and privacy rules still work, and your power and backup-entry plan is practical. Condo ownership does not automatically mean you can change every part of an entry door.

The safest order is permission → door fit → building constraints → model and ownership plan. If any step is uncertain, pause the order and send Lockin the model name, measurements, and door photos before drilling or removing hardware.

1. Confirm who controls the door and what approval is required

Start with the condo declaration, bylaws, alteration rules, and any written guidance from the association or property manager. Ask a specific question rather than “Can I install a smart lock?”:

May I replace the existing exterior and interior deadbolt hardware on this unit entry door with the named Lockin model, and may the installation change the visible exterior hardware, strike, or door preparation?

Ask whether the answer changes because the door opens onto a shared hallway, uses a building master-key system, is part of a fire-rated or labeled opening, or must preserve a management, emergency, or service-entry method. Keep the approval with your door photos and measurements.

Condo ownership can involve shared building elements and controlled egress even when the door serves your private unit. Do not drill, enlarge a bore, replace a strike, or change labeled hardware until the responsible owner or facilities team confirms the change and any required professional review. A consumer fit guide cannot establish fire-door, accessibility, egress, or association compliance.

2. Identify the existing lock before choosing a Lockin model

Lockin’s Veno deadbolts are not a universal replacement for every condo entry. First identify whether the door has a standard single-cylinder deadbolt with a separate latch, or something different:

Existing condition Ordering decision
Standard bored, single-cylinder deadbolt Continue to the measurement checks.
Mortise, multipoint, interconnected, narrow-stile, panic, or institutional hardware Stop and request model-specific or professional review.
Building card, fob, wired, or managed electronic access Confirm that the building’s required access method will remain available.
Fire-rated, labeled, shared-egress, or otherwise controlled opening Obtain approval from the responsible authority before touching the hardware.
Storm door or screen door near the entry Check physical clearance; it can also block a video model’s camera.
French door or unusual two-door arrangement Do not assume a Veno deadbolt is compatible; verify the exact model.

If you cannot name the existing lock type confidently, photograph the outside face, inside face, door edge, strike, and nearby hardware. The current Lockin FAQ and user-manual library are better references than a generic “standard condo door” assumption.

3. Measure the door for the exact model

Measure with the door open, and record inches and millimeters. Lockin’s current fit guidance for the Veno family uses these checks, but the allowed crossbore and clearance can vary by model:

Check What to record Why it matters
Door material and thickness Material; 35–55 mm (1⅜–2¹¹⁄₆₄ in) where the model specifies it The body and mounting hardware must span the door correctly.
Crossbore Diameter of the large hole: 38 mm (1½ in) or 54 mm (2⅛ in), as supported by the model The exterior and interior assemblies must align.
Backset Door edge to the center of the crossbore: 60 or 70 mm (2⅜ or 2¾ in) The latch must line up with the bore and strike.
Edge bore and latch 25.4 mm (1 in) edge hole; rectangular or round faceplate The latch preparation must match the exact guide.
Strike and pocket Depth, alignment, and clearance in the frame A motor cannot reliably correct a tight or misaligned door.
Nearby clearance Handle, trim, glass, door stop, wall, and second-door spacing The lock must open, close, and remain serviceable without collision.

The current Veno product guidance is model-specific. For example, Veno Go and the two Veno Solar models show 38 or 54 mm crossbore options, while Veno and the current Veno Pro and Veno Plus product pages use 54 mm. Lockin’s current fit guide also notes a documentation boundary for Pro and Plus: some linked guides illustrate both bore sizes while the product pages specify 54 mm. If your condo door has a 38 mm crossbore and you are considering Veno Pro or Veno Plus, contact Lockin Support with the model, measurements, and photos before ordering. Do not enlarge the hole based on an assumption.

For a Solar model, also check the model’s nearby-handle and door-stop clearances and whether the exterior panel receives usable light. A shaded interior condo corridor may be physically compatible but a poor environment for solar-assisted charging. Solar models still use a rechargeable battery; they are not battery-free.

For a video model, check the camera’s view from the closed door. A storm or screen door may block the camera or create a clearance problem. Veno Pro and Veno Plus are listed with video and different storage/detection capabilities, so do not transfer one model’s camera, storage, or fit details to another.

4. Confirm the building’s privacy and camera rules

If you are considering Veno Pro or Veno Plus, ask whether a camera facing a shared hallway is allowed and where recording may point. A condo association may have rules about common-area views, neighbor privacy, visitor recording, signage, or retention even if the camera is attached to your unit door.

Lockin lists Veno Pro with a 2K/180° camera, person/package/vehicle detection, and 32 GB of local video storage. Veno Plus is listed with a 2K/180° camera, person detection, and 8 GB of local storage. Those are model-specific capabilities, not a promise that every Veno lock records video. Lockin also states that biometric data for the Video Veno series is stored locally on the device; connected features such as remote access, alerts, account functions, and integrations still use network services.

Before ordering, decide:

  • whether you need video at this doorway or a non-video model is a better fit;
  • who may view activity or video;
  • how long recordings or access records should be retained;
  • how residents will be informed about the device; and
  • how the account and stored users will be transferred or deleted if the unit is sold.

If the building does not permit a camera, consider a non-video path such as Veno, Veno Go, Veno Solar Palm, or Veno Solar Face—subject to the same door and permission checks.

5. Preserve required building access and plan everyday entry

Ask the manager or association whether maintenance, emergency responders, or building staff must retain a particular key, credential, or entry procedure. A Lockin smart lock should add an approved access method, not silently remove a building requirement.

Then decide how each household member will enter. Depending on the model, Lockin lists palm-vein, fingerprint, face, PIN, app, voice, and mechanical-key methods. The Lockin Smart App may also support one-time, temporary, or recurring codes on applicable models. Choose one method for each resident and at least one backup that does not depend on a charged phone or internet connection.

Write down who owns the Lockin account, who can administer access, when guest codes expire, and how credentials are removed when a resident, cleaner, caregiver, or contractor no longer needs entry. Never share the administrator password simply to provide a door code.

6. Make a power and connectivity plan for the condo location

Choose the model around the doorway, not only the feature list. Veno and Veno Go are rated for up to seven months per charge in Lockin’s current product information; Veno Pro and Veno Plus are rated for up to three months. Actual runtime varies with use, connectivity, temperature, camera activity, and settings.

For an interior corridor, do not assume a Solar model will receive enough light. Confirm the light conditions at the lock during the times it would need to charge, and keep the rechargeable-battery plan regardless. For any model, decide who will monitor the battery, where a charged replacement or charging cable will be kept, and how emergency power and the mechanical key will be tested after installation.

If the condo Wi‑Fi is managed by the building, confirm that your unit can use the required network and that setup conditions match the exact model. Current Lockin guidance distinguishes model and platform requirements; the Lockin Smart App remains important for setup and device management even when a Veno model integrates with a smart-home platform.

7. Use a simple order/no-order gate

You are ready to order when all of these are true:

  1. The association, manager, landlord, or responsible authority has approved the exact kind of hardware change in writing.
  2. The door is a compatible residential opening, or Lockin/support has confirmed the exception.
  3. Your measurements match the exact model’s current product page and guide.
  4. Camera, solar, and exterior-hardware rules fit the condo doorway.
  5. Required building access will remain available.
  6. Every resident has an everyday entry method and a backup plan.
  7. You know who will install, restore, maintain, and eventually transfer the lock.

If any answer is “not yet,” use the Lockin Smart Lock Selector, compare the exact product page, and contact support with the measurements and photos. A clear “not this door” decision is better than buying a lock that cannot be approved, fitted, or maintained in the building.

Frequently asked questions

Does owning a condo mean I can install any smart lock?

No. Check the condo documents and building requirements first. The door may be part of a shared, fire-rated, labeled, or managed opening, and the association may regulate visible hardware, cameras, or access procedures.

Is a standard condo door automatically compatible with Lockin Veno?

No. Confirm the exact model’s door thickness, crossbore, backset, edge bore, latch faceplate, strike, and clearances. “Standard” is not a measurement.

Can I order Veno Pro or Veno Plus for a 38 mm crossbore?

Do not assume it. Current Lockin sources agree on 54 mm for the product pages but differ in some linked guide illustrations. Ask support to confirm the exact kit using your model, measurements, and photos before ordering or drilling.

Is a Lockin Solar model suitable for an indoor condo hallway?

Only if the doorway receives suitable usable light and the exact physical fit is confirmed. Solar assistance depends on placement and light; the lock still relies on its rechargeable battery and backup methods.

What should I send Lockin Support if the fit is unclear?

Send the exact model, door thickness, crossbore, backset, edge-bore and latch-faceplate details, plus photos of both door faces, the edge, strike, handle, door stop, and any storm or screen door. Include the building’s relevant permission or restriction if it affects the installation.

What is the next step after the measurements pass?

Use the Smart Lock Selector, open the exact model page, read its current quick-start guide and manual, confirm the condo’s written approval, and only then place the order.
