Will a New Smart Lock Cover the Paint Marks and Extra Holes Left by My Old Lock?

A new smart lock may fit the existing deadbolt opening without covering every paint mark or extra hole left by the old hardware.

A new smart lock may fit the existing deadbolt opening without covering every paint mark or extra hole left by the old hardware. Compare the old assembly’s outline and exposed openings with the new assembly in its required mounting position before committing to the replacement. Overall height and width alone cannot establish coverage around every edge. If appearance is important, treat this as a separate purchase check from bore size and backset; a mechanically compatible lock can still leave a visible outline on the door.

The old marks need to be located relative to the mounting opening rather than compared as two free-floating rectangles. Use existing photographs or an authorized inspection to identify where the old plate ends above, below and beside the bore. For Veno Pro, the North American specification lists different exterior and interior assembly dimensions, so assess each face separately. Those dimensions describe the product envelope, not a guaranteed contact outline. Ask for model-specific clarification when the important mark lies near an edge or curved corner.

A surface color difference and an exposed hole require different decisions before the replacement goes ahead. A visible paint outline may be an appearance issue you can accept or include in a planned refinishing job; an opening, damaged mounting area or uncertain door construction needs an installer’s assessment. Do not move the new lock away from its prescribed position simply to cover a mark. Keep the photographic comparison tied to the actual mounting location, and let the responsible professional decide whether door work is needed instead of using a cosmetic cover to conceal an unresolved installation problem.

An added decorative plate should be used only when its compatibility with the exact lock and installation has been confirmed. A plate that hides a mark may also change how the assembly seats, so a generic accessory listing does not establish an approved Veno Pro arrangement. Ask the manufacturer and installer about the proposed part before buying or modifying it. If no suitable solution is confirmed, choose between accepting the cosmetic outline, arranging appropriate door refinishing or selecting another verified installation; do not let the appearance decision force an unsupported hardware change.
