If Apple Home is a purchase requirement, choose the Lockin Veno Go over the exact Schlage Encode BE489 only when your door fits Veno Go and you are comfortable completing a Matter setup. Lockin documents Veno Go support for Apple Home through Matter; Schlage says the BE489 does not support Apple HomeKit and cannot be upgraded to add it.
That comparison is model-specific. Do not apply the BE489 result to every Schlage lock, and do not confuse Matter-based Apple Home integration with Apple Home Key. Veno Go can be a practical choice for a household that wants palm-vein entry plus a path into Apple Home, but you still need the correct controller, current app/firmware, pairing code, and a backup way to enter.
The short comparison
| Question | Lockin Veno Go | Schlage Encode BE489 |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Home path | Documented through Matter | Schlage says Apple HomeKit is not supported |
| Can the current model be upgraded for Apple Home? | Use the documented Matter setup path and current model instructions | No; Schlage says the BE489 cannot be upgraded for compatibility |
| Main connection approach | Lockin Smart app plus Matter pairing; Apple’s current guidance supports adding Matter accessories in Home | Built-in Wi-Fi with Schlage Home app; the product page also lists Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant |
| Entry methods relevant to this decision | Palm vein, code, app, key, and Matter-enabled voice in the product summary | Keypad codes, app, and other model-specific methods; this comparison does not assume biometric entry |
| Important limit | Apple Home Key and Siri remote unlocking are not promised | Encode Plus BE499 is a different model and should not be substituted for BE489 evidence |
The useful difference is ecosystem path, not a blanket claim that one lock is more secure. If you already own a BE489, adding a bridge or changing an app setting will not add Apple Home support according to Schlage’s current support answer. You would need a different model designed for that ecosystem.
What Matter changes for Veno Go
Matter is the interoperability layer that lets a compatible lock be added to supported smart-home ecosystems. Apple’s current instructions say that the Home app supports Matter locks and that a Matter accessory previously paired with another app can be added from another Matter-supporting app through More Options.
For Veno Go, the Lockin FAQ describes this practical division:
- Use Lockin Smart to add the lock, manage the lock, update firmware, manage palm profiles and codes, and access model-specific settings.
- Use Matter to expose the lock to Apple Home for ecosystem-level control and automations supported by Apple Home.
- Keep a physical key, code, or emergency power option available. A smart-home connection does not replace the lock’s backup-entry plan.
The Veno Go product page currently lists built-in Wi-Fi and Matter, five unlocking methods, up to seven months of battery life, and power-bank or key backup. The separate Veno Go FAQ is more conservative about Apple setup and specifies a compatible Matter hub/controller. Follow the model’s current instructions and controller requirements at setup time rather than treating “built-in Wi-Fi” as proof that no Apple hub is needed.
How to add Veno Go to Apple Home through Matter
Use these steps as a setup checklist. Menu names can change with app and firmware versions, so use the current Lockin and Apple prompts if they differ.
1. Confirm the prerequisites
Before pairing, confirm that:
- Veno Go is installed, powered, calibrated, and already added to the Lockin Smart app.
- Lockin Smart and Apple Home are updated, and the lock has current firmware available for your model.
- Your Apple setup has a compatible Thread-capable home hub/controller. The Veno Go FAQ lists Apple HomePod (second generation), HomePod mini, and supported Apple TV 4K configurations. Apple’s own guidance also identifies Thread-enabled home hubs such as HomePod mini, HomePod (second generation), and compatible Apple TV 4K models.
- Your phone, lock, and network are ready for pairing. The Veno Go FAQ specifies 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi for the lock and says the network should not use a hidden SSID; its Apple checklist also expects the phone and Apple devices to be on the same network during setup.
- You have the Matter pairing code. The Veno Go FAQ says to use the Matter QR code on the lock’s battery cover or the code copied from Lockin Smart.
If you do not have a compatible Apple Thread hub/controller, stop here and resolve that requirement first. Pairing attempts without the required controller can look like a lock failure when the missing piece is the home network.
2. Start Matter binding in Lockin Smart
Open Lockin Smart and select the Veno Go from your device list. Go to the device settings, find Matter Integration, and select Bind Matter. The FAQ describes a five-minute pairing window, so have Apple Home open and the pairing code ready before starting it.
Do not delete the lock from Lockin Smart just because Apple Home is not yet showing it. The Lockin Smart app remains the configuration and troubleshooting surface for the lock. Resetting or deleting a device can erase data and create another setup job.
3. Add the lock in Apple Home
In Apple Home, open the Home tab, tap the add button, and choose Add or Scan Accessory. Scan the Matter QR code on the Veno Go battery cover, or enter the code supplied by Lockin Smart. Finish the onscreen prompts, then assign a clear name and room.
Apple’s current Matter instructions use the same general flow: Home → Add → Add Accessory. If the accessory was previously paired to another app, Apple says to open More options and select the paired Matter accessory. That is the relevant route when Veno Go has already been bound in Lockin Smart.
4. Test before relying on a routine
Test the lock from both surfaces while you are at the door:
- Lock and unlock from the Apple Home device control.
- Confirm that the lock still works from palm vein, code, key, and the Lockin Smart app as applicable.
- Check whether the Apple Home controller reports the expected locked or unlocked state.
- Test the Matter controller’s response after the phone leaves the immediate Bluetooth setup area.
- Confirm that your backup key and emergency power method are accessible.
Veno Go’s FAQ says remote unlocking through Siri is disabled by platform security policies. Treat Apple Home integration as a way to bring the lock into Apple’s supported control and automation environment—not as a promise that every voice command, especially voice unlocking, will be available.
What you get—and what you do not
The Veno Go’s Apple Home advantage is that Matter gives an Apple-household a documented integration path while the lock still offers palm-vein entry and Lockin-specific access management. This can matter if different family members prefer touchless entry, codes, the app, or a key, while the household wants its lock visible alongside other Matter accessories.
It does not mean:
- Veno Go supports Apple Home Key. No current source reviewed for this article establishes that feature.
- Veno Go has blanket native HomeKit support. The documented path is Matter-based Apple Home integration.
- Siri can remotely unlock the door. The Veno Go FAQ expressly lists that restriction.
- Every Schlage Encode model has the same ecosystem support. This article covers the BE489; Schlage identifies Encode Plus BE499 as a different Apple-compatible model in its support answer.
- Apple Home replaces Lockin Smart. Keep Lockin Smart for model-specific setup, access management, firmware, and troubleshooting.
Which one should you buy?
Choose Lockin Veno Go when Apple Home compatibility is part of the decision, you want palm-vein entry, and you can meet the Matter/controller and door-fit conditions. It is the more direct fit for a shopper comparing an Apple Home path with touchless access and multiple backups.
Choose or keep the Schlage Encode BE489 when you specifically want its built-in Wi-Fi and Schlage Home workflow and Apple Home is not required. If Apple Home is non-negotiable, do not buy the BE489 expecting a later firmware or hub upgrade to solve the gap; Schlage’s current answer says that upgrade is not available. Investigate an explicitly Apple-compatible Schlage model instead, and compare that model separately.
Before ordering Veno Go, review the Veno Go product details, confirm your door measurements and included configuration, and keep the Lockin FAQ and user manual library available for the current Matter and installation instructions. The decision is simple: Veno Go is the Lockin option in this comparison with a documented Matter-based Apple Home route; BE489 is not an Apple Home upgrade candidate.
