Can a Z-Wave-Only Hub Control a Lockin Veno Smart Lock?

No—not directly. A Z-Wave-only hub cannot control the Lockin Veno Go through Z-Wave because Veno Go uses built-in Wi-Fi and Matter, not Z-Wave. Lockin lists Veno Go as requiring no separate hub for its Matter connection. To use another home-automation hub, that hub must support Matter as a controller and support the lock’s actual connection path; a Z-Wave radio by itself is not enough.

The compatibility answer in one table

Your hub setup Can it control Veno Go? What to verify
Z-Wave radio only No, not through Z-Wave There is no shared protocol for the hub to commission or command the lock.
Matter controller over a supported network Potentially yes Confirm the hub supports Matter locks, the Veno Go model, and the current firmware/app flow.
A hub with both Z-Wave and Matter Potentially yes through Matter The Matter controller function—not the Z-Wave radio—does the lock integration.
A generic Z-Wave-to-Matter adapter Do not assume it Only use an adapter when its maker documents this exact lock, supported commands, and firmware conditions.

Why Z-Wave alone is not enough

Z-Wave and Matter are separate smart-home protocols. A Z-Wave controller can communicate with Z-Wave devices, but adding a Z-Wave radio does not make it a Matter controller or translate every Matter lock command.

The current Veno Go product page identifies the lock’s smart-home connection as built-in Wi-Fi and Matter, with support listed for Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, and Samsung SmartThings through Matter. It also says “No hub” for the lock’s Matter setup. That means the relevant question is not whether your hub has a Z-Wave antenna. It is whether your chosen system can commission and control this Matter lock over the network path it supports.

What a compatible hub needs to do

Before buying or changing a hub, check all of these conditions:

  1. Matter controller support: The hub or platform must act as a Matter controller, not merely expose Z-Wave devices.
  2. Lock support: The platform must support Matter door-lock devices and the commands you need, such as lock and unlock. “Matter compatible” alone does not prove that every device type or command is supported.
  3. Veno Go support: Confirm that the current Veno Go model, app, and firmware are supported. Do not extend a Veno Go result to every Lockin Veno model.
  4. Network path: If the implementation uses Wi-Fi Matter, confirm the controller can reach the lock on the required local network. If a platform requires a Thread border router for a different Matter device, that requirement does not automatically describe Veno Go.
  5. Safe commissioning: Follow the current Lockin app/manual and the platform’s Matter pairing flow. Keep the Lockin app and a local entry method available while testing.

Home Assistant’s Matter documentation describes the Matter integration as using a Matter controller/server and notes local-network requirements such as IPv6 and mDNS. Those are platform-level conditions; they do not turn a Z-Wave-only hub into a Matter controller or prove that a particular Veno Go firmware is supported.

A practical way to check your existing hub

1. Identify the exact hub and firmware

Write down the hub’s manufacturer, model, firmware version, and enabled integrations. A product label that says “smart-home hub” is not enough. Look specifically for Matter controller support and door-lock support.

2. Separate the radios from the controller roles

Your hub may have Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Thread, or more than one radio. Those radios do not automatically tell you which controller roles the software supports. Check the hub’s current documentation for Matter commissioning and Matter lock control.

3. Check the Veno Go path

Start with the exact Veno Go product page, current Lockin app instructions, and the Veno Go FAQ/manual. Confirm the model and firmware before pairing. Do not use instructions for Veno, Veno Plus, Veno Pro, Veno Solar Palm, or another Veno variant as a substitute.

4. Test one non-critical command first

After pairing, test status if available, locking, unlocking, the Lockin app, and your backup entry method. Test locally and remotely only if your platform documents both. Keep a physical key, code, palm access, or other supported local method available while you validate the integration.

5. Stop if the bridge is undocumented

If an adapter or hub claims to “connect anything,” ask for documentation naming Veno Go, Matter door-lock support, supported firmware, and the exact commands. Without that evidence, treat the setup as unverified rather than assuming a protocol conversion will work.

What this means for a Z-Wave household

You can still keep a Z-Wave system for other devices. The change is architectural: Veno Go would need to be controlled through its supported Matter path, while your Z-Wave devices would continue using Z-Wave. A hub that supports both protocols may present them in one interface, but the Matter side must be enabled and working.

If your current hub is genuinely Z-Wave-only, the simplest supported path is to use Veno Go through the Lockin Smart App and its documented Matter-compatible home platforms, rather than buying an unverified protocol adapter. Check the current Lockin product information and support documentation before installation or pairing.

Bottom line

A Z-Wave-only hub cannot directly control a Lockin Veno Go. Veno Go’s relevant smart-home path is built-in Wi-Fi and Matter, and Lockin says no separate hub is required for that Matter connection. Choose a controller that explicitly supports Matter door locks and the exact Veno Go model—or keep the lock on its documented Lockin/Matter path. A Z-Wave radio alone does not create Matter control.

For the latest model conditions, review the Veno Go product details, then use Lockin’s FAQ and user manual library before pairing. For platform-level Matter requirements, see Home Assistant’s Matter documentation.
