Left-Hand vs. Right-Hand Door: Does Smart-Lock Handing Matter?

Yes—door handing matters during installation and setup. For Lockin Veno and Veno Pro, the matching round entry handle is reversible for left- or right-hand doors, so you do not need a different handed version of that accessory. The smart deadbolt still needs correct assembly and its own calibration. Lockin lists the handle’s reversible design on the round entry-handle product page.

That is the key to a left-hand vs. right-hand smart lock decision: distinguish the lower lever’s orientation from the deadbolt’s setup. A lever that faces the right way does not confirm that the powered lock is ready to use.

Smart-lock door handing: three separate checks

What you are checking What it means at your door What to do for Veno or Veno Pro
Door orientation Which side has the hinges, and whether the door swings inward or outward Record both from a stated viewpoint and compare your door with the installation diagrams
Entry-handle orientation How the separate lower lever is arranged for that door Use the named reversible round handle and follow its included assembly instructions
Deadbolt setup Correct mechanical assembly, followed by the lock’s calibration process Follow the exact model’s quick-start guide and app prompts; check actual bolt movement

These checks work together. Reversibility helps you use the model-matched lever on either side, while calibration is a separate step in setting up the smart lock.

Identify the door’s orientation without mixing viewpoints

Use outside, facing into the home as the reference for your notes. Keep that viewpoint consistent when describing the door to an installer or Lockin support.

  1. Locate the hinge edge. Record whether it is on your left or right from outside. Open the door enough to identify the hinge side if it is not visible when closed.
  2. Record the swing. A door that opens into the home is an inswing door; one that opens toward the exterior is an outswing door.
  3. Describe both together. For example: “From outside, the hinges are on the left and the door swings inward.” That description is more useful than an unexplained “LH.”
  4. Match the guide’s viewpoint. When an installation diagram shows the interior side, your outside-view left and right will be reversed. Use the diagram’s labels and hardware positions before choosing an orientation.

Handing describes the door’s layout; it is separate from whether you prefer using your left or right hand. It also does not establish overall door compatibility. Check the exact model’s requirements in the door-fit guide, including the door preparation and clearance around the lower handle.

Does a left-hand door change which Lockin handle to order?

For Veno or Veno Pro, start with the round entry handle for those two models. Its reversible lever is intended to accommodate either left- or right-hand doors within the accessory’s stated fit requirements. Follow the instructions supplied with the handle to arrange it for your door.

Lockin also describes its square entry handle as reversible, but the model pairing remains a separate buying decision. Changing the door’s handing is not a reason to switch from the round accessory to the square one. See the round-versus-square Veno handle guide for the model map and fit details.

Treat a reversible smart lock handle as an orientation feature, not a promise that every handle fits every lock, door thickness, or door type. For another Lockin model, check that model’s accessory listing and documentation before ordering.

Set up the deadbolt separately from the lever

For Veno and Veno Pro, use the matching documents on Lockin’s user-manual page. The lower handle’s instructions do not replace the smart lock’s installation guide.

Veno Pro provides a useful example. Its quick-start guide says to keep the deadbolt latch retracted and the interior thumbturn vertical before joining the interior assembly. After assembly, turn the thumbturn and check that the latch extends and retracts smoothly without sticking. Use the guide’s illustrations for the exact component positions. Veno Pro quick-start guide, printed pages 13–14.

Then complete calibration:

  • First installation: follow the on-screen calibration instructions during device setup.
  • Relocating or recalibrating an existing Veno or Veno Pro: select the lock from the device list, open its settings, choose Calibrate Deadbolt, and follow the guide displayed there.

Both model-specific troubleshooting guides document that route. Follow each prompt’s required door position; do not assume the entire process happens with the door open or closed. Veno troubleshooting guide, PDF page 11, Veno Pro troubleshooting guide, PDF page 11.

Use that documented setup path before relying on powered lock and unlock operation. Do not look for an assumed left/right switch or apply another model’s button sequence. If the current app differs from the guide, use Lockin’s FAQ and support resources for the next step.

What if the lever looks right but the lock does not work correctly?

A correctly oriented lever and a smoothly operating deadbolt are separate results. After completing the model’s setup, check that the lock and unlock actions produce the expected bolt movement and that you can operate the door normally. Keep an authorized backup entry option available while checking.

If the thumbturn sticks, the bolt meets resistance, or powered operation does not match the requested action, pause. Do not force the mechanism or keep recalibrating through a physical obstruction. Lockin’s motor-jam guide explains the safe first checks for resistance; support can help with unresolved direction or setup behavior.

For your left-hand vs. right-hand smart lock check, finish with three things confirmed: a clearly described door orientation, the correct reversible Veno handle, and successful exact-model deadbolt setup. Start with the Veno/Veno Pro round handle, then keep the matching installation guide beside you through calibration.
