Exterior vs. Interior Smart-Lock Temperature Ratings: Why Both Matter

Check the operating temperature on both sides of your door before choosing a smart lock. For Lockin Veno Solar Palm, the exterior range is −22°F to 158°F (−30°C to 70°C), while the interior range is 32°F to 122°F (0°C to 50°C). The indoor assembly must also remain indoors, protected from outdoor elements. An exterior panel that tolerates freezing weather does not make the whole lock suitable for an exposed gate or a room that drops below freezing. See Veno Solar Palm specifications and door requirements.

Veno Solar Palm offers touchless palm-vein entry, so you can unlock without reaching for a key. Checking its installation environment first helps you choose a doorway suited to that everyday convenience. The key distinction is where each assembly will actually operate—not simply whether the door is called a front door, garage door, or patio door.

Exterior vs. interior smart-lock temperature ratings

The exterior assembly faces the approach to the door. The interior assembly sits on the other side, where you use the indoor controls. Each has its own operating limits.

Veno Solar Palm assembly Published operating range What to check at your door
Exterior −22°F to 158°F (−30°C to 70°C) The coldest and hottest conditions expected at the outside assembly
Interior 32°F to 122°F (0°C to 50°C) The conditions in the room containing the indoor assembly, including when heating or cooling is off

These values appear in Lockin’s Veno Solar Palm / Veno Solar Face FAQ, page 7, as well as the Solar Palm product specifications. This guide applies them to Veno Solar Palm; check the exact documentation for any other model.

Read the two rows separately. Do not combine the exterior minimum and maximum into a single range for the entire lock. If the outdoor side is within its range but the indoor side is below 32°F, the installation is outside the published interior operating range.

These are operating-temperature specifications. They are not a promise of identical battery life or unlocking performance at every temperature, and they should not be treated as battery-charging or storage-temperature specifications.

Why “inside the building” may still need a check

A normally heated home and an unheated outbuilding can put the interior unit in very different conditions. An enclosed garage, shed, or seasonal room may keep rain off the lock while still becoming too cold or too hot for its indoor assembly.

For an entry between a garage and the house, identify which room will contain the interior assembly. Check that room’s conditions, rather than assuming the garage temperature applies to both sides. Separately confirm the door’s physical compatibility and the product’s placement requirements before deciding it fits.

Do the same for a sunroom or enclosed porch. A roof or glazing is not evidence that temperatures stay within the indoor range. Consider the room when it is unused, overnight, and during seasonal extremes—not only during a comfortable afternoon inspection.

Screen the location before you buy or install

  1. Identify both sides. Write down where the exterior and interior assemblies will sit. Record whether the interior unit would be exposed to rain, spray, or other outdoor elements. If it would, the location does not meet Lockin’s indoor-only requirement.
  2. Check the expected low and high at each side. Use local seasonal conditions as a starting point, then account for the actual doorway and room. For an unconditioned space, a suitable minimum/maximum thermometer can help document conditions. A short measurement period does not establish year-round suitability.
  3. Compare each side with its own range. The exterior must stay within −22°F to 158°F; the interior must stay within 32°F to 122°F. Do not round an out-of-range reading into compliance. If conditions are uncertain or close to a limit, ask Lockin support to review the location before installation.
  4. Complete the remaining fit checks. Temperature is one part of suitability. Review the exact model’s door preparation, weather-exposure restrictions, and installation instructions through the Lockin user-manual hub. For Veno Solar Palm, assess usable light separately; passing a temperature check does not establish solar-charging suitability.

Use this small worksheet to keep the two sides separate:

Check Exterior assembly Interior assembly
Location Outside face: ___ Room containing indoor unit: ___
Expected minimum ___ °F ___ °F
Expected maximum ___ °F ___ °F
Inside its published range? Yes / No / Unknown Yes / No / Unknown
Protected indoor placement? Check exterior exposure rules Yes / No / Unknown

A No means the location fails that requirement. An Unknown means the screening is incomplete. Two temperature passes still leave the other installation requirements to check.

Three examples of how to use the ranges

The following are hypothetical screening examples, not measured installations or product tests.

Situation Temperature result Decision
Exterior at 10°F; interior unit in a heated room at 68°F Both values are within their respective ranges These readings pass the temperature comparison; verify seasonal extremes and the remaining fit conditions
Exterior at 20°F; interior unit in an unheated room at 25°F Exterior is within range; interior is below 32°F This location fails the interior temperature requirement under those conditions
Exterior at 100°F; interior unit in a hot enclosed room at 125°F Exterior is within range; interior exceeds 122°F This location fails the interior temperature requirement under those conditions

The second and third examples show why the indoor range can decide the outcome even when the exterior has ample temperature tolerance.

Can Veno Solar Palm go on an outdoor gate?

An exposed gate that puts both assemblies outdoors does not meet the indoor-only requirement. Mild weather does not change that restriction. Lockin’s Solar FAQ, pages 4 and 6 requires a protected indoor environment for the interior assembly and describes it as unsuitable for outdoor exposure.

Do not assume that adding a small cover or choosing a sheltered gate makes that installation suitable. Have Lockin support assess an unusual doorway before buying; the exterior temperature rating alone cannot approve it.

Does the weather rating replace the temperature check?

No. Veno Solar Palm’s exterior IP53 rating and its operating-temperature limits answer different questions. The IP rating does not extend the indoor temperature range or remove the requirement to keep the interior assembly indoors. Check both the environmental restrictions and the temperature specifications for the exact model.

Make the next decision with both sides in view

Before choosing Veno Solar Palm, record the expected temperature range on each side and confirm protected indoor placement. If a limit may be exceeded, or you cannot establish the room’s seasonal conditions, use the Lockin FAQ and support resources to review your location with the exact model name and your observations.

If those checks support the location, continue with the Veno Solar Palm door-compatibility requirements. Keep the model’s mechanical-key and USB-C emergency-power options in your access plan; neither substitutes for installing the lock within its environmental limits.
